It’s Holiday Time Again!
It’s Holiday Time Again!
It’s that time of year again!
While you celebrate the holidays with family, friends and feasts, remember that dogs aren’t people. While your dog will gladly celebrate with you and your guests, many of the delights that humans enjoy can be harmful or even deadly for your dog.
Here are some examples of foods that should not be shared if you want to keep your dog happy and healthy:
– Garlic, onions and chives can cause anemia, causing reduced energy or stamina;
– Nuts and even nutmeg can cause stomach complications and possibly seizures;
– Raisins and grapes can cause various forms of gastric distress and even kidney failure in dogs;
– Eggnog is full of raw eggs, cream or milk, sugar and often alcohol. All of these ingredients can cause gastric distress;
– And don’t be tempted to reward good behavior with turkey bones, whether cooked or raw. As with most bones, these can cause a huge risk to your dog – choking, damaged teeth, mouth injuries and digestive issues including gastric pain, blockages or bleeding and perforations due to splintering!
– Alcohol, caffeine and chocolate are toxic to pets and should be strictly avoided.
It’s best to ask your guests, especially children, not to give your dog any of the “people” food. Keep treats on hand specifically made for dogs so that you, your guests and pets can all enjoy your holiday cheer — keeping Happy Dogs in Happy Homes!
